The Museum's Home and Future Plans

In October 2002, the Computer History Museum acquired a landmark building at 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View, Calif. A few months later, in June 2003, the Computer History Museum's first phase opened, including a 9,000 square-foot Visible Storage exhibit area with 600 key objects from the collection, a 400-person auditorium, donor acknowledgment walls and more.

In addition to tours of its extensive collection -- including pre-computing objects, software, hardware and underlying technology, graphics systems, networking, Internet, and computing precursor systems -- the Museum's first phase programs include public lectures, seminars, workshops, and artifact restoration and other volunteer-led projects. A new exhibit, Mastering the Game: A History of Computer Chess, opened in September 2005.

The Museum is currently raising funds to expand its offerings in future Phases with world-class exhibitions derived from its collection, including a Timeline of Computing History, galleries with in-depth focus on select major areas of computing history and a large gallery for rotating topical exhibits. These physical exhibits will be augmented by a rich online CyberMuseum experience that includes access to the Museum's extensive archive and its large warehoused collection of computing artifacts.
