Founded in 1947, Tektronix quickly became known as a supplier of very high quality electronic test equipment. Their experience with storage oscilloscopes led them to develop a very high quality graphics storage display system.
Most graphics displays have to be refreshed constantly and this is a large drain on the resources of the computer – storage scopes actually stored the information and did not need to be refreshed – a large advantage when computers were at the end of slow data transmission lines.
