Dr. Dietrich Prinz, Head of Programming at the English firm Ferranti, worked on the Ferranti Mark I computer in collaboration with Manchester University. His interest in computer chess was probably influenced by his colleague Alan Turing. Prinz is shown here loading a rudimentary chess program into a Manchester University computer in 1955.
