In May 1997, IBM supercomputer Deep Blue played World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov winning the six-game rematch 3.5-2.5. Deep Blue thus became the first computer system to defeat a reigning world champion in a match under standard chess tournament time controls. All but one of the six-game series were sold out.
