Chess developers Larry Atkin (left) and David Slate program dominated computer chess for nearly a decade, winning every championship except two in the 1980s. At the 10th Annual ACM Computer Chess Championship supercomputer-based Chess 4.9 won the tournament, followed closely by custom chess machine Belle. Sargon 2.5 the only microprocessor-based chess program in the tournament, came in an impressive seventh place.
