Martin Cooper tells his life story, growing up in Canada and the US, the son of entrepreneurial parents. He joined the navy and learned lessons in discipline and systemization… along with a little about electronic communications. He was later employed at Teletype Corp. before moving on to Motorola. It was there where he got heavily involved in communications from both an engineering and marketing point of view. He was ultimately credited with “inventing the cell phone” as a result of his role as project manager and cheerleader for this new type of communications device. He made the first public cell phone call, in this case to his competitor at AT&T. He later became corporate director of R&D at Motorola. After leaving Motorola, Martin has been involved in numerous other companies associated with the communications and cell phone businesses, including Cellular Business Systems and ArrayCom.
