Description
Morgan Sparks (July 6, 1916 - May 3, 2008) joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1943. He worked with Gordon Teal to develop the first successful junction transistors based on the work of William Shockley. Sparks rose through the Bell management ranks and in 1972 became director of the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which was then managed by AT&T. This audio tape interview with Sparks and his wife Betty (Shockley's secretary at Bell Labs) was conducted by Lillian Hoddeson and Michael Riordan in 1993 during research for their 1997 book "Crystal Fire: The Birth of the Information Age." It was fully transcribed and edited by Riordan and Morgan M. Sparks in 2009.
