Dr. Suhas Patil grew up in a small town 170 miles from Calcutta. With encouragement from his parents, he followed a technical path attending St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta after graduating from high school. He then attended Indian Institute of Technology nearby to study electronics in the early 1960’s. With the encouragement of a visiting American professor at the Institute, he decided to study in America after leaving IIT. He was accepted at MIT where he earned a PhD in Computer Architecture. He became a professor at MIT until 1975 when he moved to the University of Utah. There he became a pioneer in applying his knowledge of computer architecture to new world of VLSI design. He went on to develop a unique set of tools and methodologies for IC design, moved to Silicon Valley, founded a successful IC design company, Cirrus Logic. He later pursued his interest in multi-processor systems in starting another company, Cradle Technologies. Dr. Patil also was one of the founder of TiE, The Indus Entrepreneurs, an organization meant to “give back” and help young engineers have the same kind of success that Dr. Patil and his co-founders had enjoyed.
