Description
This oral history focuses mainly on Les’ business career, 35 years of which were spent at Intel. He immigrated to Canada from Hungary in 1956, where he attended McGill University. His first job was at Transitron in Silicon Valley where he learned the basics of semiconductor design and technology. From there he moved on to Fairchild in 1964 after feeling his career was stagnating. At Fairchild, he became convinced that MOS was the real future of semiconductors and eagerly joined Intel in 1968 when Noyce and Moore left Fairchild. At Intel, he initially headed the MOS engineering organization. His group was responsible for all the early microprocessor development, including the 4004, 8008, 8080, etc. As Intel grew, so did Les’ responsibilities as he took on varying roles including GM of the microprocessor division, head of strategic planning, and founder of Intel’s investment arm, Intel Capital. He now grows grapes in Sonoma Valley, CA, and helps selected startup companies in Silicon Valley.
