Description

This volume contains electrical measurements on transistors subjected to various diffusion processes together with several amplifier design schematics. DC and AC preamplifier schematics show early examples of junction FET (Field Effect Transistor) devices applied to the design of analog circuits. Grebene went on to apply this work to a differential amplifier circuit, one of Fairchild’s first linear (analog) ICs and its first dielectrically isolated chip with nichrome resistors for improved tolerance to nuclear radiation designed for Radiation Inc. (later Harris) in Florida.

Biographical Notes

Alan B. Grebene earned a B.S.E.E. from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, an M.S.E.E. from U.C. Berkeley (1963) and a Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York (1968). He served as a member of the Technical Staff at Fairchild Semiconductor from 1963 to 1965 he worked on early linear IC designs. He joined Sprague Electric Company in 1965 and returned to California in 1968 as Manager of Circuit Research at Signetics Corporation where he designed the first commercial Phase Locked Loop (PLL) ICs. He co-founded EXAR Integrated Systems Inc. in 1971, where he was the Senior Vice-President. He founded Micro Linear Inc. in 1983 and sold his interest in 1986 to provide consulting services to VCs and start-up companies. In 1989 he founded Symmetry Design Systems to provide modeling software tools. From 1969 to 1975, while at EXAR, Dr. Grebene was also a lecturer in the Graduate School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Santa Clara. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE, and has served as the past Chairman of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society San Francisco Section.
