This interview describes Jim Morgan’s upbringing in the Midwest, his 30 years as CEO of Applied Materials and the important societal issues he has been focused on since stepping down from Applied. He describes the impact his early experiences had on his management approach and the important lessons learned while in the army. As CEO, he guided Applied Materials from a struggling $20M company to a multi-billion dollar leader in semiconductor equipment. Subsequently he has focused on “Sustainable Planet” issues and took a leadership role in forming the Northern Sierra Partnership, a coalition of groups focused on protecting the Sierra Nevada Watershed in Northern California. He concludes with advice for the youth in our society on the need to work on important societal issues using a systems approach.
