Description

China born, Matthew Miau grew up and went to primary school in Taiwan and high school in Hong Kong. He received a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and later, an MBA from Santa Clara University. Upon his graduation from UC Berkeley, his first engineering job was with Electronic Arrays, which was later bought by North American Philips. In 1971 he moved to the fledgling semiconductor company, Intel Corporation, where he worked with the founding team members as well as many other of the early Intel employees who went on to become well-known industry leaders. It was while at Intel that he went to the University of Santa Clara to earn his MBA.

In 1976, Mr. Miau decided to return to Taiwan and invest in and become Chairman of a tiny, struggling company, Taiwan Automation Company. It later became MiTAC which itself became the foundation for the MiTAC International, a group of information technology related global businesses headquartered in Taiwan.

In this oral history, Mr. Miau discusses his progress from being a junior engineer at a small U.S. semiconductor company, Intel, in the early 70’s to becoming the Chairman of a multibillion dollar global enterprise. He also provides his insights regarding how the small island of Taiwan has become one of the global high tech powerhouses and his contributions to its development.
