Description

This film is an introduction to data processing, focusing on its role in modern life. Funded by a grant from IBM, it features the IBM 1620. The film presents vignettes discussing early learning, the role of numbers in society, the stock exchange, the abacus, and early mechanical calculators (including those created by Pascal, Leibnitz, Bollee). Also discussed is the Babbage Difference Engine, and the ENIAC.

The film features interviews with Fred Gruenberger of the Rand Corporation, J. Presper Eckert from the ENIAC team (and the Sperry Corporation), Richard Hamming of Bell Laboratories, and director Richard Moore.
