Description

B&W, Front, perspective, view of IBM 1414-2 INPUT OUTPUT SYNCHRONIZER with a white background. White top and side, black front base pedestal. Black side paneling, grey pair of doors on front, black top with air vent. Verso: "IBM 140 CORE MEMORY" in light black pencil, sideways in upper left edge.

The IBM 1414 Input Output Synchronizer was used with IBM 1410 systems as well as IBM 7000 series systems. It was the interface between peripherals and these mainframe computers. The 1414 synchronizer attached to IBM Magnetic Tape units, IBM Unit Record Equipment (card reader, card punch, printers, paper tape units etc) and telecommunications equipment.

The IBM 1414 had a buffer for data to or from the peripheral. The mainframe transferred data to or from the buffer at high speed. Logic in the IBM 1414 transferred the data to or from the attached peripheral. In this way the mainframe computer did not have to wait for each character transfer from a slow pripheral like a card reader or teletype.
