This is a black and white image of four sequence pictures showing a new helmet, designed to monitor brain activity in space, that was developed at UCLA's Brain Research Institute. Final sequence is that of the Health Sciences Computing Facility where complex analyses of data are performed on an IBM 7094 system. Two pictures are outdoor shots during daylight with light coming overhead. The remaining two pictures are indoor shots with light coming from the overhead lights. Each image has two men with white shirt and tie wearing white lab coats working with the helmet. Verso side of image has written in pencil "#1418" and stamped in black ink "Photograph by Leigh Wiener." Also on verso side is a press release on a white sheet which states "A revolutionary new helmet, designed to monitor brain activity in space, has been developed at UCLA's Brain Research Institute. It was demonstrated at dedication Friday of the nation's largest medical computer center--the UCLA Health Sciences Computing Facility. The center is processing brain wave data recorded by the helmet. Upper left: Dr. Milton DeLucchi, (Major, USAF), and Dr. Ross Adey, UCLA brain scientist, examine components of helmet. Upper right: Major DeLucchi fits helmet to an Air Force cadet in preparation for test run. Lower left: Test run on Los Angeles freeway demonstrates helmet's ability to pick up brain responses to freeway hazards. (Data--including brain and heart readings as well as voice descriptions of driver activity--is recorded on seven-channel tape device in car.) Lower right: Dr. Adey (left) and Major DeLucchi discuss helmet data in Health Sciences Computing Facility where complex analyses are performed." This press release came from "Al Hicks UCLA Public Information Office BR 2-8911, Ext. 2342" and "For Release: Sunday, July 21, 1963." Written on press release sheet in pencil is "#1418."
