Burks traces the development of the stored-program computer from the antecedents of the ENIAC through the first generation of stored-program computers: EDVAC, IAS, WHIRLWIND, EDSAC, UNIVAC I, and others. He begins with a detailed discussion of the ENIAC's hardware and arithmetic design, organization, and differential analayzer, as well as programming and evaluation of the ENIAC. He then discusses the development of high-speed READ-WRITE electronic stores and code organization for the stored-program computer.
