Al Hoagland describes his work on non-contact magnetic recording, beginning at UC Berkeley and continuing on at IBM. While at IBM, Hoagland worked on the design and development of the RAMAC disk drive system, the forerunner of all modern disk drives. Hoagland describes the state of the industry in terms of IBM and its competitors and the challenges they faced as the disk drive became an inexpensive commodity product.
