Biographical Notes

Victor Grgurinović was born in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1924 to Croatian immigrant parents. He formally changed his name to Grinich to simplify roll call during his service in the U.S. Navy in World War II. As Grinich he received a Bachelor's degree from the University of Washington (1950) and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (1953) after which he pursued research at Stanford Research Institute (SRI), Menlo Park, California. Hired by William Shockley in 1956, Grinich was a member of the group of eight technologists who left Shockley Semiconductor to found Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957. At Fairchild he set up the test lab and other electronic systems where he was responsible for device characterization and applications. As Associate Director of Research in 1962, he shared “close responsibility with Dr. Moore in the overall lab direction.” According to Fairchild co-founder Julius Blank, ''He probably did more to push the analog circuitry than anyone else I know, especially in those early days.'' His department grew into the Fairchild Instrumentation operation that was spun out as a separate division of Fairchild Camera. Grinich left Fairchild in 1968 to found Escort Memory Systems and later taught at Stanford and the University of California at Berkeley.
