In this interview with Marc Weber, Winifred Mitchell Baker, best known for her role as Executive Chairwoman of the Mozilla Foundation, provides an account of her life and career. She discusses her upbringing in Berkeley,California, and her educational background, receiving a BA in Chinese studies and a JD (both from University of California, Berkeley). Baker describes her introduction into the high tech world, taking a position at law firm Fenwick & West before moving to Sun Microsystems and, afterwards, joining Netscape. Baker became head of the Mozilla foundation in 2002 and describes the process of adjusting to Netscape’s new ownership (AOL), the development of Mozilla’s first product (Mozilla Application Suite 1.0), and the development and life of the Firefox web browser. She closes the interview by describing Mozilla’s plans for the future and discusses her experiences as a female leader in Silicon Valley.
