Curator Notes

Facebook launched the Open Compute Project (OCP) in 2011 in an attempt to maximize the energy efficiency and “green” impact of large-scale data centers. The project gave free access to open source design specifications for rack-mounted hardware, motherboards, and interconnects that were made available for download at opencompute.org. The Freedom server is a first generation OCP product, and is taller than most rack-mounted servers, allowing for larger heat sinks and cooling fans to increase heat dissipation and efficiency. The server’s components were also designed to be easily serviced by technicians, and its minimalist construction makes it lighter than typical servers making them easier to lift and less of a burden to recycle at their end-of-life.
