Description

Jonney Shih was born in Lu-Kang, Taiwan, one of 6 children. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at National Taiwan University and a master's degree in business management from National Chao-Tung University. Upon his graduation in 1978, he joined Multitech, a company that later became Acer, where Stan Shih was his early mentor. Their lifelong relationship is one of the interesting themes throughout this oral history.

Jonney Shih entered his career in computer technology from the field of microprocessors, starting with a marketing job at Multitech. He quickly moved on to an engineering position where he rose to become the head of R&D, first at Multitech and later, at Acer. In 1993 Jonney Shih left Acer to become the Chairman and CEO of ASUSTEK where he led the transformation of the company from an ODM to a branded PC manufacturer.

Mr. Shih recounts his experiences working on the first Chinese PC, the first Taiwanese IBM compatible PC, as well as the lessons learned from the Apple and IBM lawsuits and competing against Intel in the motherboard business. His reflections on the role of technology, the growth of, and ultimate role of, the Taiwanese high tech community in the global computer industry round out Jonney Shih’s oral history.
