Curator NotesDesigned in 2005 at Amazon’s Silicon Valley R&D campus, Lab126, Inc., this was the first prototype for Project: Fiona, the internal codename for the original Kindle project. This donation includes several other prototypes, including un-used industrial design concepts, the final Kindle product design and cover, as well as designs for consumer packaging. When the first Kindle was introduced in 2007 at a price of $399, it sold out in less than a day and was subsequently out of stock for several months. By the end of 2013, 44 million Kindles had been sold.
The screen shows an image of M.C. Escher’s drawing “Ascending and Descending” and was last refreshed in 2005. Donor Gregg Zehr is President of Lab126.
