The Mike Markkula collection of early Apple material consists of documents ranging in date from 1970 to 1997 that Markkula collected while involved with Apple Computer Inc. Materials include manuals, marketing materials, early business documents, and software. The bulk of the text consists of user manuals and documentation for early Apple software and hardware, including products like the Apple II, Apple IIe, Lisa, and Apple IIc. The collection also holds magazines from the 1980s that feature Apple or Apple executives. About a fifth of the collection consists of Markkula’s subject files, which include clippings of Apple ads, newsletters such as “Contact” and “Apple Times,” clippings of articles featuring Markkula, Apple dealer price lists and newsletters, and Apple annual reports and stock information. Items of particular note include pre-IPO (initial public offering) materials, early press kits for Apple products, a 1973 Apple marketing philosophy document, and a subject file on John Sculley. Software, which makes up about a third of the collection, includes approximately 130 3.5 inch floppy disks, 370 5.25 inch floppy disks, and 60 packaged software items. The majority of the software is created by Apple. The collection also contains two audiocassettes and a small number of photographs.
