Description

The Amiga 1000, also known as the A1000, is the first personal computer manufactured by Commodore International in the Amiga line. On the left side of the A1000 front panel is a slot for a 3 1/2" floppy disk. On the right are two badges: one with the name AMIGA and another with color checkmark logo. The checkmark was used only on the A1000 model.

On the left side of the A1000 is the on-off power switch.

On the back of the A1000, from left to right, are a female keyboard jack, a male DB-25 parallel port connector, a female DB-23 floppy disk port connector, a female DB-25 serial port connector, a pair of RCA jacks for right and left audio channels, a male DB-23 RGB video connector, a female DIN TV video output connector and a RCA jack for composite video output. Beneath the video connectors, recessed in the chassis is the AC line cord connector. There is also a cooling fan shroud on the back.

On the right side of the A1000 are two male DB-9 game controller connectors.

The A1000 used a 16/32 bit Motorola 68000 microprocessor with a 7.16 MHz clock. Standard memory configuration was 256KB of RAM, upgradeable to 512KB and 8KB of bootstrap ROM. In addition, the A1000 had 256KB of Writeable Control Store (WCS) reserved for the Operating System (OS). At initial release, the Amiga OS had software bugs. Although it was possible for the OS to execute from ROM, programming it into a ROM would preclude bug fixes. The WCS operated like a ROM. At power-on, the OS was loaded from the Kickstart floppy disk. Then the WCS made read only so it could not be over written even after a system reset. Only after a power-off followed by a power-on could WCS be reloaded.
