Donate Historical Materials

Shipping Instructions

After you receive notification from the Registrar that your donation has been accepted, you will be required to arrange for the delivery of the item(s) to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. You can deliver your donation in person if you contact us in advance. If you choose to ship your donation, the Museum will assist in the arrangements but the donor is responsible for all shipping costs. However, since the museum is a registered non-profit corporation, these shipping expenses are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Please follow these shipping guidelines:

1. Pack items in strong cardboard or crated containers appropriate for the weight and size of the item(s). If at all possible, use acid-free packing materials. The original boxes that items were sold in are valuable to us, please protect them during shipping. Double-boxing (i.e. a box within a box) is encouraged. Consider using plastic sheeting around the item(s) to avoid the possibility of water damage.

2. DO NOT use foam peanuts as packing material. This method of packaging is not environmentally-friendly, enters into openings of donated items requiring tedious manual cleaning to remove, attracts static electricity, is difficult to recycle, and creates an enormous cleaning problem as it tends to fly away on its own. If you believe that the item(s) are fragile then consider wrapping the item(s) in bubble wrap.

3. Clearly address all packages to the following address:

Attn: Registrar / Donation
Computer History Museum
1401 N Shoreline Blvd.
Mountain View, CA 94043
U.S.A.

Also, be sure to include your name and return address. If you are donating very large items, please call Allison Akbay at 650-810-1022 to arrange for delivery.

4. Make a note of the tracking number your shipper uses. If the item has a high value, please consider insuring the item. NOTE: Many companies, such as FedEx, DHL, etc., have "small print" regarding the transport of Museum artifacts, sharply limiting the insurance liability of the carrier for an item damaged in transit, even if additional insurance is purchased. Be careful! For extremely rare or fragile items, please contact us for alternative means of delivery.

5. Only ship the item(s) that have been accepted by the Computer History Museum. If during your packing of the accepted item(s), you discover other items you think might be of interest to the Computer History Museum then submit another offer using our online form or use email to contact us.

Curatorial review:
Once the item(s) arrive at the museum, they are reviewed by a curator to ensure that these are in fact the items that were accepted and that they are in the condition described by the donor. If the item(s) physical condition is not what was disclosed in the initial offer and/or the item(s) sent are not the item(s) listed in the offer, the museum reserves the right to reject the item as unusable for collection purposes and no tax receipt for those items will be issued. The Museum will then contact the donor to inquire as to whether the rejected item(s) be returned or if they should be disposed of. All of the rejected item(s) that the donor requests returned will be shipped back to the donor at their expense. If the item(s) are verified by the curator as being the items originally accepted by the Computer History Museum, a deed of gift, which serves as a tax receipt, will be issued. Once the deed of gift is signed by the donor and the Computer History Museum, then the donation is complete.
