CORE MAGAZINE

Editorial Guidelines

Core is published by the Computer History Museum in fulfillment of its mission “to preserve and present for posterity the artifacts and stories of the information age.” The print magazine is published biannually each spring and fall in a full-color format rich with images and content. The museum publishes the magazine in parallel on its website at computerhistory.org/core along with supplementary content.

Content
Using its vast collection as a starting point and resource, the museum seeks stories that focus on the history of computing, including explorations of important people, stories, technologies, industries, projects, and objects. We endeavor to deliver "insider" perspectives, and to highlight stories not covered in other forums.

Our audience is diverse, intelligent, and creative and all articles should be comprehensible to readers outside of an article’s specialty.

The intention of Core is to introduce new perspectives of computing history or to cover older material in a new way. We aim for articles that synthesize and interpret with an accurate understanding of contemporary historical events and/or advances. It is important to place the artifact or technology in historical perspective and to evaluate its impact on the field of computing. It is equally important to discuss the stories of people and of their experiences and to explore the impact of computing upon the world.

While we realize that many advances in computing have been made in the United States, we seek to present the heroes and the history of computing from multiple perspectives and nations.

Length
Technical articles should be between 1,000 and 2,500 words and should be accompanied by photographs, charts, tables, etc. to better illustrate and support the content.

Illustrations and captions Please supply original photos (high-quality and large format) or high-resolution scans (600 dpi @ 100%) on CD, DVD, or via FTP. Originals for illustrations should be clear and easily reproducible. Each figure or table must be numbered, cited in the text, and have a caption.

Please contact the editor to arrange for the best delivery of any original archival material. Figures and photographs that are to be returned to the author should be clearly marked on the back with the return name and address. The museum may be able to arrange to photograph items for your article in exchange for reproduction rights of the photos.

Captions should include an acknowledgment of the source of a picture or figure, and the appropriate permission statement or photographer, where required.

Article format
Along with the article, please submit the title and author's name, affiliation (or past affiliation), address, and telephone number, plus the names and addresses of other authors. Include an abstract of 100 words or fewer and a brief biographical sketch including: current positions and technical interests, prior professional experience and other important activities, awards, education, and professional affiliations. An edited version of this biography will appear with the article.

Please avoid footnotes and endnotes. Incorporate parenthetical information in parenthesis in the main text. To stimulate further research and to satisfy the curiosity of our more demanding readers, references and reading lists are appreciated and can be accommodated on the Core website.

A reference to an article should be complete with all authors' names, title of the article, name of the publication, volume and number, publication date, and inclusive page numbers. A reference to a book should be complete with the author's name, title of the book, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, and specific chapters or pages cited or recommended.

Copyright and clearances
All manuscripts submitted for publication should be original. Articles previously published or under consideration for publication elsewhere will be considered on a case-by-case basis and should be acknowledged as such at the time of submission. The author is responsible for securing all necessary copyright clearances and inserting into the manuscript any wording that may be required by other copyright holders. To protect the author as well as the Computer History Museum, a copyright agreement must be completed before publication. No article will be published until a completed copyright form has been received.

Review and editing
Manuscripts considered for publication in Core must pass a review process consistent with other standard technical periodicals. The review process will normally not exceed six months. After an article has been accepted for publication, it will be copyedited by Core staff editors. This is a collaborative process in which the author and editor work together to achieve a concise, well-worded article.
