K–12 School and Youth Groups
CHM is a rich resource for K–12 students, educators, and youth groups to learn about the technological innovations that have shaped our modern world. Explore the history of computing and its ongoing impact through inquiry-based programs that integrate 21st Century skills such as observation, critical thinking, and creative problem solving.
Reserving Your Visit
Decide how your group will experience the Museum.
All exhibitions and demonstrations are open to self-guided groups. Educators are encouraged to design activities and resources that
connect the Museum’s content to their classroom curriculum and may consult with CHM Education staff for assistance in planning
a self-guided visit.
Self-guided visits are available for groups of 10 to 60. Groups must be accompanied by adult chaperones over the age of 18, with a minimum of two chaperones per 15 students. Self-guided visits must be reserved at least two weeks in advance. We cannot guarantee admission to groups without confirmed reservations, due to space restrictions in the Museum.
Wednesdays through Sundays, encouraged between 10AM-12PM and 1-3PM.
Docent-led tours provide an interactive view of our permanent exhibition, Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing.

Docent-led tours last approximately one hour and are available for groups of 10 to 30 students, accompanied by at least two adult chaperones over the age of 18 per 15 students. Docent-led tours must be reserved at least eight weeks in advance. Transportation subsidies are available for Title 1 schools.
Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, 11AM-12PM.
Interactive workshops enable students in grades 3 through 12 to take a deeper look at computer history in ways that are specific to
their developmental stages and abilities. All workshops integrate skills such as problem solving, questioning, collaboration,
and public speaking.
Groups can choose from the following workshops:
Design the Future — A computer pioneer once told Steve Jobs, “You can’t really understand what’s going on now unless you understand what came before.” In this workshop, students will explore important innovations in computer history to help them imagine and design technologies for the future. Their future innovations may someday be part of history!
Make Software — Software allows computers to touch nearly every aspect of our daily lives. In this workshop, students will explore the history and impact of software, use Raspberry Pi technology to complete a project, and learn how the instructions they give computers can make things happen in the real world.
Cracking the Code — Humans have been using code to share information for centuries. In this workshop, students will discover different ways people have communicated over time, from Incan Quipu to Morse Code; uncover the motivations behind code writing; and explore how computers read and interpret code today.
Design_Code_Build — This workshop explores the engineering design process by analyzing modern and historical technologies and innovations. Participants will investigate important moments in computing history, reflect on changes in human-computer relationships, and explore various methods of input and output. Using Raspberry Pi technology, participants will collaborate on a project highlighting ways in which we can use technology to solve problems.
Workshops last approximately 2 ½ hours and are available for groups of 10 to 30 students, accompanied by at least two adults over the age of 18 per 15 students. Workshops must be reserved at least eight weeks in advance. Transportation subsidies are available for Title 1 schools.
If your group is larger than our maximum, please contact us to discuss options for accommodating your needs. We have creative solutions for groups of all sizes. Remote groups can schedule a Beam Virtual Tour.
K–12 groups must arrive with at least two adult chaperones over the age of 18 per 15 students. The Museum may, at its discretion, postpone or cancel visits for groups that arrive without adequate adult supervision.
Well-prepared chaperones are an essential part of a successful visit. Please ensure that all adults in your group are familiar with our Chaperone Guidelines before arriving at the Museum. Guidelines are also available in Spanish.
The Tessera: Ghostly Tracks
From now through June 2017, bring your students to CHM for a very special opportunity! The Tessera: Ghostly Tracks is an interactive mystery for groups of 12-30 students in grades 7-11.
Players engage with the history of computing and learn about individuals who influenced the development and growth of information technologies. Through game play, students learn and practice computational thinking concepts and skills such as breaking down large tasks into smaller steps, developing and following detailed instructions, and debugging -- identifying and fixing problems they encounter along the way.
The Tessera is collaborative, interactive, and fun, and lasts about one hour. For more information or to schedule a visit with your students, contact Stephanie Corrigan.
Transportation Subsidies for Title 1 Schools
Through the generosity of our donors, the Museum is able to provide subsidies of up to $400 or the cost of one 50-person bus for Title 1 schools participating in any of our programs.
Subsidies are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and must be requested at the time a visit is reserved. Groups will receive notification of approved subsidies when they receive confirmation of their visit. Requests made after a visit has been scheduled cannot be honored.
Transportation subsidies are issued as reimbursements to a school or district after a visit has been completed. To request reimbursement for an approved subsidy, submit the Transportation Subsidy Reimbursement Request and all required documentation no later than 60 days after your class visit. We cannot provide funds before a visit, nor can we pay individuals directly. Requests made after 60 days cannot be honored.
Prepare for Your Visit
Educators are encouraged to preview the Museum and familiarize themselves with our exhibitions and educational resources. Free admission for educators is provided upon presentation of valid faculty or staff identification; advance notice is appreciated.
Educators may also consult with CHM Education staff for assistance in planning a visit or tailoring the Museum’s content to meet classroom needs. Contact Alexander Shaffer for a consultation.
Reservation Changes, Cancellations, and Parking
All changes to your group reservation must be received at least five days in advance, including changes to your group size. We cannot accommodate requests made with less than five days’ notice.
Docent-led tours and workshops require a minimum of 10 students. If your group size decreases to less than 10, please let us know as soon as possible so we can discuss possible options. Groups with fewer than 10 students are still welcome to visit the Museum on a self-guided basis.
Cancellations must be received at least two weeks in advance.
Individual cars may park in our front lot. Bus parking is available in the Museum’s side lots. If no space is available, buses should park on the access road in areas that are not painted red.
