Ivan Sutherland

 

Starting with his Ph.D. thesis, Sketchpad, Ivan E. Sutherland has contributed numerous ideas to the study of computer graphics and computer interaction. He introduced concepts such as 3-D computer modeling, visual simulations, computer aided design (CAD) and virtual reality. Currently a vice president and Fellow at Sun Microsystems. Ivan was a founder of Evans and Sutherland Computer Corp and held faculty positions at Harvard, Caltech, Imperial College, London, Carnegie Mellon, and the University of Utah. He is a member of the National Academies of Engineering and of Sciences and received the ACM Turing Award in 1988.

Bert Sutherland
Dr. William R. Sutherland retired from Sun Microsystems in 2000 after nearly a decade as Director of Sun Labs. Previously he managed computer research laboratories at PARC and BBN after a few technical years at MIT Lincoln Lab. Bert was a US Navy carrier aviator chasing submarines during the cold war.
