Summary
The Computer History Museum, located in Mountain View, California, seeks individuals for an internship. This unique and exciting institution is home to one of the largest and most rare collection of information technology related documents and the largest collection of computer related artifacts in the world. The Museum's vision is to explore the computing revolution and its impact on human experience. Backed by leaders and innovators of the computer industry, CHM is actively working on exhibits, collections, public programs, and special events.
Responsibilities
CHM is one of a very few institutions that is making a concerted effort to collect software. The software collection is unique in its large array of materials, which include punched cards, metallic tape, paper tape, 8-inch floppy disks, and magnetic tape. The software archives intern’s primary responsibilities will be cataloguing the software collection and assisting the Software Archivist as needed. The Software Archives Intern reports to the Software Archivist.
The internship is available on an ongoing basis. The Computer History Museum offers a stipend ($1,000 for 12 hours a week or $1,500 for 18 hours a week). The stipend is offered to graduate students regardless of whether they get school credit. The Computer History Museum is accessible by public transit.Qualifications
- Graduate student working towards a degree with coursework or experience in archives, cataloging or museum studies.
- Detail-oriented and ability to be flexible.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
- 12 to 18 hours a week for 3 months. All work must be done onsite. Hours are flexible within an 8 am to 5 pm work day.
- Sense of humor.
Preferred Qualifications, Attributes and Skills
- Knowledge of cataloging principles and standards.
- Knowledge of database software.
