Summary
The Computer History Museum, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, California, seeks an articulate, creative & "can-do" individual for the position of Associate Director of Development, Corporate Relations. The Museum’s mission is to preserve and present for posterity the artifacts and stories of the information age. This unique and exciting institution is home to one of the largest collections of computer-related artifacts in the world. Backed by leaders and innovators of the computer industry, the Museum brings computing history to life through its speaker series, exhibitions, oral histories and website.
Position Summary
The Associate Director of Development, Corporate Relations reports to the Vice President of Development and has primary responsibility for raising cash and in-kind gifts from corporations and corporate foundations in support of the Museum’s fundraising goals. This important staff position requires effective interactions with diverse groups, including colleagues, volunteers, members of the Silicon Valley corporate and foundation communities, and Museum donors and their families.
Responsibilities
- Be knowledgeable of the Computer History Museum’s mission, exhibits, programs and long-range plans, and stay current with the functioning of the entire institution
- Work closely with the Vice President of Development, Museum executives and colleagues, and the Board of Trustees to involve them whenever possible in all aspects of prospecting, soliciting and securing of sponsorships, in-kind and cash donations from corporations and corporate foundations
- Identify potential corporate donors/sponsors by using prospecting tools and techniques including corporate directories, newspaper and other media reports, volunteer contacts, donor lists, networking, Internet searches, etc.
- Contact and cultivate potential corporate donors, sponsors and partners through personal visits and tours, telephone calls, direct mail, e-mail, at events, etc.
- Secure corporate contributions, sponsorships and partnerships through personal visits, telephone calls, proposal writing, etc.
- Maintain high retention rates from existing members and sponsors from year-to-year
- Submit bi-weekly activity reports to the Vice President of Development on corporate fundraising progress
- Coordinate and help manage the creation, evolution and maintenance of paper, electronic and Web-based collateral materials to support the Museum’s corporate development goals and processes
- Administer benefits and maintain excellent relationships with existing corporate members and sponsors
- Maintain accurate and timely records of all activities using Raiser's Edge and other systems as needed
- Direct or assist with implementation of recognition, cultivation, and corporate-sponsored events
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Qualifications, Attributes and Skills
- Results-oriented team player with optimistic attitude who takes initiative as an independent worker and embodies CHM core mission
- 3 – 5 years of development-related professional experience or 5+ years of sales experience effectively selling from a relationship or consultative sales methodology
- Proven track record exceeding aggressive goals and providing exceptional customer service
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable establishing relationships over the phone
- Significant experience negotiating with senior management and presenting either to groups or one-on-one
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work accurately under deadlines and the pressure of a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, Power Point and other office software; Experience with Raiser's Edge preferred
- Flexible schedule - early morning, late evening and weekend hours on occasion
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
