Apple Shares Mac Interface with Microsoft
Microsoft Corp. and Apple Computer, Inc. sign a licensing agreement allowing Microsoft to copy the visual characteristics of the Macintosh interface for its Windows software. The agreement, which was confidential for three years, of a 1988 lawsuit in which Apple sued Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard for violating Apple copyrights to Macintosh displays. According to the 1985 agreement, Microsoft would acknowledge that displays designed by Microsoft had been derived from Macintosh displays. In return, Apple gave Microsoft license to use the design in its software. A judge eventually decided Apple had only limited rights to the design.
