Jan Uddenfeldt


Dr. Jan Uddenfeldt, a principal innovator and creator of the wireless industry including GSM technology and mobile broadband 3G and 4G LTE technology. He is the former global Chief Technology Officer of Ericsson and Sony Mobile Communications.

Dr. Uddenfeldt currently has the following responsibilities:

  • Senior Advisor to the Corporate Executive Officer of R&D at Sony Corporation (from October 2012)
  • Senior Advisor to the Chief Technology Officer at Ericsson (from August 2013)

He was global CTO and Senior VP at Sony Mobile Communications (previous Sony Ericsson) from July 2010 to September 2012 based in Redwood City, California with central reporting units in Lund, Sweden and Tokyo. During this period, the company was transformed to an Android only, smartphone company.

Dr. Uddenfeldt is the former global CTO and Senior VP at Ericsson in Stockholm, Sweden. He worked at Ericsson from 1978 to 2010. Having held various roles such as Chief Technology Officer at Ericsson Radio Systems during 1989-1998 and Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for the Ericsson Group during 1998-2004. He was responsible for the global wireless infrastructure and handset R&D including 2G (GSM and TDMA), 3G (WCDMA, HSPA) and 4G LTE as well as fixed network technologies. During 2004-2010 he was Senior Vice President and Senior Advisor Technology to the CEO with his office in Stockholm and from 2008 in San Jose, California where he focused on strategy for IP network products and partnership with Internet companies.

Dr. Uddenfeldt received his Ph.D. from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1978 and received an honorary Doctor's degree from the University of Lund in 1996. Dr. Uddenfeldt is a Fellow of IEEE, and a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). He has been awarded several prestigious prizes for his achievements; the German Edward Rhein Foundation Technology Prize for the innovation of GSM in 1997 and the Swedish KTH Prize in 2000 for GSM and 3G. In 2005, he received the Gold Medal from the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences for his contribution to the cellular industry. He is also a recipient of the Telecom Innovator of the Year 2009 Tech America award.

He was inducted into the Wireless Hall of Fame in 2014 at the CTIA Wireless History Foundation event for his work on the development of advanced wireless technologies e.g. GSM, 3G and LTE. He also received the Japanese 2014 NEC C&C Prize for his leadership in establishing digital mobile communications globally.
