Control Data Corporation (CDC)
The Control Data Corporation was founded in Minneapolis in 1957 by a group of engineers, many of whom came from the nearby Univac establishment (originally ERA). They eventually became famous as a supplier of very large and powerful scientific computing systems, many of which were designed by Seymour Cray and his associates, until he left to form his own high performance computer company in 1972.
As the demand for high performance mainframes fell, CDC had various financial problems and what remained of the company was finally purchased by Syntegra in 1999, a data mining firm.
