Arthur Rock, long time technology venture capitalist, describes in an interview with John Markoff how his investing career began and his involvement helping form some of the first Silicon Valley technology companies. Rock grew up in Rochester New York and began his career on Wall Street after graduating from Harvard Business School. While at the investment firm, Hayden Stone, Rock meets and helps fund the “Traitorous Eight” engineers at Shockley Laboratories including Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore who together began Fairchild Semiconductor. Moving to Silicon Valley, Rock forms the venture capital firm of Davis and Rock and begins a series of technology venture capital investments over three decades that help form companies including Intel, Intersil, Scientific Data Systems, Teledyne and Apple Computer. Since the mid-1990’s, Rock has been an active philanthropist supporting efforts in childhood education and corporate governance.
