Description
Steven R. Hofstein joined RCA Laboratories as a new graduate in 1960 and was assigned the task of fabricating an MOS transistor, a project that was considered career limiting by more seasoned engineers. Working with Fred Heiman, in 1962 he produced the first working MOS integrated circuit. He also worked on RCA’s development of the liquid crystal display with George Heilmeier, which led to the development of color LCD displays. On leaving RCA he founded Princeton Electronics and developed the lithicon, a low power silicon image storage device. He later founded Cognasys LLC, developer of a family of expert system software solutions. For additional information, see the oral history of RCA Laboratories recorded on the same day.
