Description

Object is a big box of electronics comprising the system unit or processor of a Fairlight C.M.I. (Computer Music Instrument). This is a Series II model (per the donor record, see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairlight_CMI#Series_II:_1982%E2%80%931985), made between 1982 and 1985.

The front of the box presents a small control panel which can be opened to give access to a power supply and 20 card slots, 15 of which are populated.

The control panel presents two blocks of small switches labeled "Processor 1" and "Processor 2". Each block has toggles labeled "Run/Halt", "N.M.I. Safe/Enable" "Restart Safe/Enable". There is an orange pushbutton labeled "RESTART" and a yellow pushbutton labeled "N.M.I.". Three small lights under the heading "Power" are labeled "+12", "+5" and "-12".

To the right of the control panel are two, eight-inch floppy drives.

On the back are many connectors and controls. From the left: Power on/off key switch (key is broken, attached); male 120V connector "AC Line in"; Female 120V connector "Graphics AC Power"; Female 7-pin DIN "Keyboard Power"; Female DB-9 "Keyboard"; Male 5-pin DIN "Graphics"; Female 5-pin DIN "Printer"; Phone jack "Monitor Phones"; Twelve 3-pin male DIN connectors for sound output. At the top of the panel is a block of DIN connectors labeled for different MIDI functions.

There is also a panel of seven fuses and a pilot light for power, and two switches for selecting between input voltages and frequencies.
