The Thinking Machine, from the "Tomorrow" documentary series
This episode of "Tomorrow" was produced to commemorate the centennial of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 1861 - 1961, and focuses on the future of artificial intelligence, robotics, and "thinking machines." Actor David Wayne hosts the episode and conducts interviews with leading computer scientists, including Jerome B. Wiesner (MIT president, director) and Oliver G. Selfridge (MIT Lincoln Laboratory). Includes the popular clip "TX-0 Writes a Western," in which the TX-0 transistorized computer is programmed to return the script for a television show in the style of a western. The resulting script is then acted out, and a brief discussion of the mechanics of the TX-0 program follows.
