Description

Object is part of the IBM System/3 computer system product line. It consists of two units mounted in the same system cabinet. The top unit is the IBM 5424. This is the card-handling unit for IBM's new 96 column punch card. This new card was released specificaly for the System/3. The IBM 5424 has two input hoppers and a control panel on the right, and a set of four hoppers on the left.

The bottom unit is the IBM 5444 Disk drive. It was a new disk drive designed specifically for uses with the Systen/3. One or two drives could be mounted in the system cabinet. This object has two drives.

The IBM 5444 disk drive had two platters: one fixed and one removable. Information was stored on both sides of a platter, resulting in a capacity of 2,457,600 bytes per platter. The removable platter is an IBM 5440 Disk Cartridge.
