Description

There is a control panel lashed to the arm. There are also spare parts bags attached to the object. The length of the object when the arm is fully extended is 113 inches. This robot was on display in the "Smart Machines" gallery at The Computer Museum in Boston from 1987 to 1993.

The iRi M50 is a six-jointed, air-powered industrial robot arm with a shoulder-elbow link arrangement and five degrees of freedom. It was often used as a 'pick and place' robot to move parts from one location to another or for lifting heavy objects. The robot is programmed using a handheld move pendant, a system terminal, and Robot Command Language (RCL).

Beginning in the 1980s, compressed air-powered robots in factories were replaced by more accurate and reliable electrically-driven mechanisms.
