This robot was on display in the "Smart Machines" gallery at The Computer Museum in Boston from 1987 to 1993.The iRi M50 is a six-jointed, air-powered industrial robot arm with a shoulder-elbow link arrangement and five degrees of freedom. It was often used as a 'pick and place' robot to move parts from one location to another or for lifting heavy objects. The robot is programmed using a handheld move pendant, a system terminal, and Robot Command Language (RCL).
Beginning in the 1980s, compressed air-powered robots in factories were replaced by more accurate and reliable electrically-driven mechanisms.
