From IBM Archives: "Swiss engineer Otto Steiger (1858-1923) invented the "Millionaire" — the first commercially successful machine based on the principle of direct multiplication — and patented it in 1893. It was manufactured and marketed by the Hans Egli Company of Zurich beginning in 1899. By the early 1900s, two thousand were in use, and the last of 4,655 "Millionaire" machines was sold in 1935."
