Description

From the original program:

Hermes is an AD project that was started in the DSAD group to investigate building distributed applications. A goal of the project is exploring the use of novel implementation paradigms and tools (i.e., location independent invocation of objects, object migration).

Another goal is learning how currently available tools (i.e., name service, RPC, multithreading, digital signature) help and where they need improvement, augmentation or repackaging in order to become valuable products.

An objective of Hermes is also building a real, rather than a toy, system that is internally usable at Digital, so that we can assess its performance characteristics in a real, very large, network environment. To this end, Hermes implements a system for the filing and processing of Employee Mileage Vouchers.

The presentation shows the current status of Hermes and include a (videotaped) demonstration of the Mileage Voucher application as well as in-depth description of the design and implementation, and of the lessons learnt so far.
