This volume described the evaluation of non-saturating switching circuits (many Polaroid photos); note regarding preparation of 1961 ISSCC paper (KMC transistors); an 8 x 10 photo of a Micrologic gate die (p. 42); an “Idea for a logic circuit” – Transistor Logic that reduces the number of resistors required and notes that it “would be good for Micrologic” (p. 22); note that D. Allison coined the name T2L from the TTL configuration that became its widely adopted nickname (p. 26). This disclosure was prior to the patent filing by TRW in September that prevailed for this important integrated logic circuit. Beeson built the circuit in discrete form and used it as the basis for his paper (with Ruegg) that inspired T. Longo at Sylvania to integrate the first commercial version.

Biographical Notes

R.H. Beeson joined Fairchild circa mid-1958 and remained at least until mid-1961. He worked for Vic Grinich on the application of transistors for high-speed switching in logic applications. He independently invented the Transistor Transistor Logic (TTL) logic configuration that was described in the 1962 ISSCC paper “New Forms of All-Transistor Logic” co-authored with H. W. Ruegg. Commercialized by Sylvania and copied and successfully promoted by Texas Instruments, TTL formed the workhorse digital IC family of the 1970s. In the late 1960s he was working for Amelco Semiconductor.
