IBM 729-I Tape drive

This object can be associated with either the 705 IO or 709 system donated by Paul Pierce.The front door of the machine opens on a hinge at the front. On the left there is a large black release button. At the center top front of the door there is a manufacturer's label that reads "IBM 729 I Magnetic tape unit." Under "IBM" the number 10 is handwritten on the label. The door is constructed of two pieces of Plexiglas divided by a metal crossbar with a knob at the center that has a set of four command buttons on each side. The far right button, which says "Tape indicate on" was inserted upside down. Inside the door the reel to reel mechanism, but neither reel is present. At the top right corner of the Plexiglas a black and gold capitol "L" transfer has been attached.
