The rectangular object has a black front on which is embossed "SHARP," the red image of what appears to be an ancient Japanese ship, and "MZ-80 I/O." Also on the front is the on/off push-button. Three cables are permanently attached to the back of the object: a ribbon cable (plus connector with 36 pins), a round cable (plus connector with 34 pins), and a flat cable (plus connector with 50 pins). The string "INTERFACE UNIT" has been embossed on the top of the object. There is also a power socket on the back of the object and a silver knob on the back of the object. On the left side of the object is an access panel, which is screwed shut.
