Description

Art Astrin, Supreme Commander of Wireless Engineering for Apple Computer, was hired directly by Steve Jobs to develop Wi-Fi connected computing in the Apple product line. In this Computer History Museum oral history, Marc Weber and Rich Redelfs interview Art, starting with his childhood in Poland, where as a teenager he built radios from discarded components to listen to Elvis Presley on Voice of America. Art’s fondness for Elvis changed his life when the music was banned by the Russians who controlled Poland at the time, leading to Art’s arrest. This set Art on a life course to the US, steeped in mathematics and RF engineering, including working for Grace Hopper on sonar technology for the Navy and helping turn around Memorex, all before his famous role in making Wi-Fi the tremendous success that it became.
