Description
Session 3 of the Desktop Publishing Pioneer Meeting focuses on desktop publishing technology in the 1970s. The session begins with a survey of the technological foundations that made the widespread adoption of desktop publishing products in the 1980s possible. The participants speak about the Engelbart demo and its influence on later developments in the field, particularly in terms of office product solutions and at Xerox PARC. An extended discussion focuses on the differences between the work and developments that occurred on the West and East Coasts, in the office and newspaper industries, respectively. The session concludes with a thorough discussion of the need for and resistance to automation in the newspaper industry and the factors that led to the rapid development of the Atex system in the mid-1970s.
