Chuck Newhall grew up in a family with a strong military tradition. He was largely raised by his grandmother, who made sure he learned the tough lessons of life at an early age. She sent him to a military boarding school at the age of 8. He pulled strings so he could go to fight in Viet Nam, only to discover that war was not the what Hemingway described.On the other hand, Newhall is a romantic, an English major in college, the author of three books, including “Brightside Gardens-A Dialogue Between the Head and the Heart”, which describes his own fabulous garden in Maryland. Despite suffering PTSD and nerve damage from his Agent Orange exposure in Viet Nam, he attended Harvard Business School and joined with two partners to found New Enterprise Associates (NEA), the largest and one of the most successful venture capital firms in the world.
In this oral history, Newhall does a marvelous job of interweaving lessons learned from his childhood and war experiences and the successes and challenges he faced as a venture capitalist. He and his partners formed a unique and long-lasting venture company and were major backers of some of the most successful startups of the last 50 years.
