Description

Computer scientist John Mashey describes his early childhood growing up as a youngster on a farm in Allegheny Country in Western Pennsylvania. He talks about his high school years, graduating in 1964, and the describes his time as an undergraduate at Penn State University in Pittsburgh using the newly acquired IBM mainframe computer systems, the IBM 7074 and IBM System/360 model 50. After graduating with a PhD in computer science, Mashey was offered a place at the prestigious Bell Laboratories, which he accepted, and where he began working on the Unix operating system and its Programmer's Workbench (PWB) utility. Mashey then went on to work at MIPS, which made RISC microprocessors and where he worked on operating system and architecture development; Convergent Technologies, where he was Director of Software; and Silicon Graphics, where he was Vice- President and Chief Scientist.
