In this two-part oral history interview, artificial intelligence pioneer Peter Hart discusses his life and career. In Part 1, Hart discusses his family background and youth in New York City, his undergraduate studies at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his graduate studies at Stanford University. He details his engagement with artificial intelligence at the Stanford Research Institute, and in particular his part in the story of the robot Shakey and the A* (A-Star) algorithm. In Part 2, Hart continues his recollections of artificial intelligence work at the Stanford Research Institute, his engagement with the emerging field of expert systems and Bayesian reasoning, his creation of the expert system PROSPECTOR, and his part in the story of the Machine Intelligence Corporation. He details his creation of an artificial intelligence laboratory for Schlumberger and the expert system firm Syntelligence. The interview concludes with Hart detailing his work with Ricoh, from re-starting its Palo Alto R&D laboratory to international corporate roles.
