Kawanishi, Tsuyoshi oral history

[This oral history is one of seven recorded in December 2014 with former leaders in the Japanese semiconductor industry. ] Kawanishi-san was born in 1929 and received a BSEE from Tokyo Institute of Technology. After attending graduate school, he joined Toshiba in 1952. He began work with semiconductors in 1957 when Toshiba established its first prototype semiconductor manufacturing operation. Starting in 1984, he managed all of Toshiba’s semiconductor operation as Group Executive for the Semiconductor Group. And finally he became Corporate Executive Vice President of Toshiba from 1990-1994. In this oral history, Kawanishi-san speaks of the importance of his manufacturing experience, the reasons for Japans success in semiconductors in the 1980’s and the challenges they face going forward.
